Broncos edge Rams 30-26 on Nix's late touchdown

Bo Nix scored on a quarterback keeper from inches out with 47 seconds remaining, lifting the Denver Broncos to a 30-26 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night at Empower Field at Mile High. The win moves Denver to 2-1 while Los Angeles falls to 1-2 after entering the season as NFC favorites.

The game swung violently in the closing minutes. Safety Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Matthew Stafford and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown with 4:49 left, giving Denver its first lead at 23-19. Stafford answered four plays later with a 48-yard strike to Konata Mumpfield after cornerback Riley Moss slipped, putting the Rams back ahead 26-23.

“Obviously a gutsy win.”

Nix then engineered a 65-yard, 10-play march aided by three Los Angeles defensive penalties. On the decisive snap, he lunged over the pile at the goal line to reclaim the lead. Stafford drove the Rams to the Denver 14 with two seconds left, but a false start pushed them back before Hufanga secured his second interception in the end zone.

Denver's defense, criticized after a Week 1 drubbing by Kansas City, stifled Jacksonville in Week 2 and contained the Rams' high-powered attack for long stretches. Stafford threw for three touchdowns against the Giants in Week 2 but faced constant pressure from Denver's front led by Patrick Surtain II and Zach Allen.

"Obviously a gutsy win," Broncos coach Sean Payton said of his team's second consecutive second-half comeback. Stafford called the loss "a tough one" as the Rams dropped their second prime-time game in three weeks.
