Gill smashes fastest ODI double century as India chase 406 in Guwahati

India captain Shubman Gill smashed the fastest double hundred in men's ODI history, reaching 200 off just 117 balls against West Indies in the second ODI at Guwahati's Barsapara Stadium on Wednesday. Gill surpassed Ishan Kishan's previous record of 126 balls set against Bangladesh in 2022 and became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double centuries.

Chasing a mammoth 406 for victory, India were cruising at 305 for 1 after 30 overs with Gill approaching his landmark and Rohit Sharma having departed after scoring his 35th ODI century. The pair had put on an opening stand of 219 runs in just 23 overs, with Rohit reaching his hundred off 63 balls.

“Shubman Gill has been talked about as the batter of the future for some time, but in Guwahati on Wednesday, he produced an innings that belonged firmly to the present.”

Earlier, West Indies posted 405 for 7 in their 50 overs, crossing the 400-run mark in ODI cricket for the first time in their history. Shai Hope top-scored with 104 before Indian bowlers claimed four wickets in the final 10 overs to restrict the visitors.

Gill's innings also saw him become the third-fastest batter to reach 11 ODI centuries, achieving the milestone in 68 innings behind only Hashim Amla (64) and Quinton de Kock (65). His century came off just 62 balls, breaking Rohit Sharma's record for the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian captain.

Rohit Sharma, playing in a venue where he averages 235 across two innings, fell for a century after a 35-ball 32 in the series opener. The 39-year-old now sits 73 runs shy of becoming the third Indian to reach 12,000 ODI runs, currently standing at 11,927 runs in 289 matches.
