NYT Executive Fatally Shot; In-Laws Arrested in California

Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old engineering director for New York Times Games, was shot dead Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Grounds, about 35 miles east of San Francisco. Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire around 3:08 p.m. and found McKinsey with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers arrested Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 and residents of Dublin, minutes after the shooting. Authorities identified the pair as the parents of McKinsey's wife, Candice Zhang. A witness told CBS San Francisco the couple wore masks and took turns firing at McKinsey.

“I saw the man fall to the ground; he had blood on his head and chest.”

The suspects face charges including first-degree murder, conspiracy, and child endangerment. They remain in custody. Police are investigating a severe family conflict as the motive, noting McKinsey and his wife were embroiled in a contentious custody battle over their three children.

Court records show the couple married in 2011 and McKinsey transitioned from female to male in 2010. Candice Zhang filed for divorce in 2025, alleging abuse against her and one child, and sought a restraining order. A court hearing on custody was scheduled for the Friday before the shooting.
