Russia Fires 7,700 Jet-Powered Drones at Ukraine, Intercept Rate Drops to 60%

Ukraine's air force reported that Russia has launched 7,700 turbojet-powered attack drones since their introduction, with the majority arriving over the summer months. Monthly totals surged from 350 in June to 1,500 in July and 2,850 in August, reaching 1,900 in the first weeks of September alone.

These jet-powered systems now account for at least half of all Russian long-range drone attacks, which also include Iranian-designed Shahed variants. The increased velocity of turbojet drones has complicated air defense efforts, lowering Ukraine's reported interception rate to roughly 60 percent since the summer surge began.

“This suggests that the enemy is not stopping, that they are finding opportunities to purchase those jet engines, other components, and assemble them on the territory of Russia.”

Air Force spokesperson Col. Yuriy Ignat stated the sustained pace indicates Moscow has secured reliable supply chains for jet engines and advanced electronics it cannot produce domestically. Ukrainian intelligence assesses that the jet engines are sourced from China, while critical electronic components such as digital signal processors and transceivers originate from US and European firms.

Kyiv continues to seek cheap, mass-producible countermeasures to address the capability gap. The drones were a rarity in the war's early years but drew significant attention in early 2025 when observers noted Shahed airframes fitted with jet engines.
