NRK is Norway's public broadcaster, founded in 1933. It carries no advertising and is tax-funded. Its national transmission network meets an obligation to reach everyone across a geography broken by fjords with a scattered population — a service no commercial broadcaster could sustain. NRK also broadcasts in Sámi and has particular depth in coverage of the Arctic.
