Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş Resigns From CHP, Will Continue Independently

Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş announced his resignation from the Republican People's Party (CHP) on September 23 via social media. In a lengthy statement, Yavaş referenced the process that began on March 19 and subsequent debates over 'absolute nullity,' arguing that internal party divisions risk damaging democratic politics.

Yavaş emphasized loyalty to the electorate, stating that offices won by popular vote should not be transferred to political addresses the voters did not approve. He declared, "Loyalty to the will of the electorate is the honor of politics." Yavaş affirmed his views have not changed and thanked colleagues he worked with under the CHP banner.

Speculation about Yavaş leaving the CHP had circulated since August. On August 14, Yavaş dismissed daily political scenarios, saying any development would be announced directly by him. CHP Spokesperson Muslim Sarı stated at the time that Yavaş had decided to continue politics under the CHP roof.

Tensions became more visible in September following Yavaş's meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Complex. Yavaş said the meeting covered Ankara's problems and investments. Sarı said the meeting was not a principled issue but noted criticism over Yavaş not attending party programs.

Yavaş ruled out joining another party, stating he will continue his political path independently. He highlighted his municipal record in Ankara, citing transparent governance and strong public support across political views.
