APC, Anambra Govt Demand Obi Quit 2027 Race Over Debt Claims

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council called on Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if he cannot refute claims his administration left financial liabilities. Spokesman Dele Alake cited new Anambra State Government records showing $123.77 million in external loans contracted during Obi's tenure, with an outstanding balance of $92.35 million valued at N127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026.

Obi has consistently denied leaving unpaid obligations, stating his administration liquidated over N35 billion in historical arrears and owed no salaries, pensions, or contractor debts at handover in March 2014. The Anambra government escalated the dispute Tuesday, posting on X a 2006 letter from then-Chief of Staff Chuks Iloegbunam appealing to Obi to clear Water Corporation salary arrears.

“He vowed to quit the presidential race if proven he left Anambra in debt. As governor, he vowed to resign if workers weren't paid on time. He broke both.”

The letter noted workers had last been paid in February 2006 against a monthly bill of N15 million. The state government said Obi vowed to quit the presidential race if proven he left debts and to resign as governor if workers were unpaid, accusing him of breaking both promises. The letter's authenticity has not been independently confirmed.
