FAA Approves Trump Victory Arch Near Reagan Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration approved the proposed victory arch championed by President Donald Trump on Friday, concluding the 76-meter structure would not substantially interfere with safe air navigation at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The monument is planned for a traffic circle near Arlington National Cemetery, roughly 914 to 1,200 meters from the runway.

The FAA determination requires the arch to feature a non-standard eternal flame at its apex and floodlights from at least three points around its base to ensure visibility for pilots. The agency had previously considered requiring red obstruction lighting similar to the Washington Monument but dropped that mandate in the final ruling.

“The structure would have no substantial adverse effect on the safe and efficient use of navigable airspace.”

Critics have objected to the arch's scale and location, arguing it will tower over the Lincoln Memorial and block historic sightlines toward Arlington Cemetery. Pilots noted that while not a direct safety hazard, the structure adds an obstacle in a corridor already demanding complex maneuvers to avoid restricted airspace.

The study found the design barely meets FAA obstruction standards, exceeding them by about 12 meters in some scenarios. Aircraft must maintain at least 238 meters of vertical clearance over the arch site, leaving a 149-meter buffer above the structure's peak. The approval clears an aviation hurdle but does not resolve pending litigation or local zoning processes required before construction can begin.
