Fireworks explosion at Mexican festival kills 10, injures 64

Pyrotechnic material exploded Saturday night during a religious festival in Santa María Canchesda, a community in Temascalcingo municipality, Mexico State. The blast occurred next to the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church as hundreds gathered for a fireworks display honoring the Virgin of the Light.
At least 10 people were killed and 64 injured, according to the Mexico State government. A local bishop confirmed two priests were among the wounded, and media reports indicate children were also hurt.

The explosion collapsed a wall and devastated the area around the church. Fireworks had been stored in a parish building used as a storage space, the local government said. Videos on social media showed survivors searching through smoke and debris.
The Mexico State Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation. The cause of the blast has not been determined. Temascalcingo, home to about 66,000 residents, lies roughly 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.
Similar accidents are common in Mexico, where fireworks feature heavily in street and religious celebrations. Nearly four years ago, an explosion in Huejutla, Hidalgo, injured 17 people.
