Guinea-Bissau beat Nigeria 3-0 in AFCON 2027 qualifier

Nigeria suffered a 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in Bissau during their second Group D qualifier for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the first half with a curled finish past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Captain Mama Baldé doubled the lead after the break, and Alvaro Djalo added a third goal late on to seal the win.

The defeat leaves Guinea-Bissau top of the group with six points from two matches, while Nigeria remain on three points after their opening 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo on Friday. Eric Chelle's side have now conceded first in both qualifiers, raising concerns about slow starts.

“For a team with ambitions of qualifying comfortably for the 2027 AFCON, repeatedly putting itself in difficult positions from the opening stages will be a major concern.”

Guinea-Bissau had earlier stunned co-hosts Tanzania 2-0 away on Matchday One, with Djú and Baldé also on target in that fixture. Tanzania are already qualified for the 2027 tournament as co-hosts, leaving Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar to contest the remaining spot in Group D.

Nigeria's Moses Usor, who scored the winner against Madagascar, and debutant George Ilenikhena were unable to replicate their form in Bissau. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali returned for his first competitive appearance since the 2025 AFCON third-place playoff.
