Hagia Sophia eastern semi-dome work starts; worship continues

Restoration of Hagia Sophia has entered a new phase targeting the eastern semi-dome above the mihrab. Static analysis and modeling showed the section requires structural reinforcement alongside conservation of mosaics, penwork decorations, and marble surfaces.

A steel work platform will be installed to give crews safe access to the semi-dome interior, followed by scaffolding and additional steel systems. The mihrab wall's marble panels will undergo cleaning, conservation, and repair.

To keep the mosque open, a temporary mihrab and minbar will be erected and work zones screened off with printed barriers. Original architectural elements, including the historic mihrab and minbar, will be shielded by physical protection systems.

A multi-layered raised floor will protect the original marble pavement from the platform's weight. Ground loading and vibration tests will precede installation. The project proceeds under the Science Committee and Conservation Board's approval.

Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said the work follows the planned schedule and emphasized that every step is taken with scientific sensitivity.
