Man City beat 10-man United in derby after controversial Haaland winner

Manchester City won the 199th Manchester derby 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday despite playing more than an hour with ten men after Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking Bruno Fernandes. Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute, his ninth in the fixture and sixth in four games.

The winner was initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision, judging that City midfielder Enzo Fernandez had not touched the ball despite being in an offside position during the build-up. United players and manager Michael Carrick were incensed, with Carrick calling the decision "worrying" and defender Lisandro Martinez labelling it an "injustice".

Hours after the match, Pro Ref — English football's refereeing body — acknowledged an "error of judgment." In a statement, Pro Ref said VAR "did not recognise the likely impact" of Fernandez's position and "should have recommended an on-field review." The body confirmed it had contacted United to acknowledge the mistake.

City manager Enzo Maresca refused to play for a draw after the red card, keeping an attacking structure until late when Nico O'Reilly replaced Fernandez to see out the victory. United dominated possession after the dismissal but failed to create clear chances against a compact City defence marshalled by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The result leaves United with a second defeat in four league games this season, while City maintain their strong start. Pro Ref said a review of the incident will take place.
