Meta Unveils Muse AI Agent and Wearable Devices at Connect 2026

At its annual Connect conference on Wednesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced Muse, a personal AI agent designed to perform tasks such as planning trips, finding replacement items, and negotiating bills on users' behalf. Zuckerberg framed the launch as a rejection of industry calls for a coordinated slowdown in advanced AI development, arguing that safety is best achieved by distributing technology widely rather than concentrating it among a few labs.

Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang demonstrated Muse operating a user's Mac with permission, running programs in the background to complete tasks. The agent is free for now, though Zuckerberg said Meta will eventually take a small fee from transactions facilitated by Muse. Wang described the goal as bringing "personal superintelligence" to billions of people.

“We believe that empowering people is the source of prosperity in the world, that the highest purpose of superintelligence is creation and invention — not automation.”

Meta also announced updates to its smart glasses and a new, slimmer pair of VR glasses pitched for watching movies, playing games, and streaming live sports rather than as a gateway to the metaverse. The keynote barely mentioned the metaverse, a shift from the company's 2021 rebranding that has seen Reality Labs lose an estimated $80 billion.

Zuckerberg reiterated his long-held view that wearable AI will eventually replace smartphones as the primary way people interact with technology. The new devices allow control through voice, eye tracking, and hand and finger movements.
