NATO Intercepts Russian Operation Targeting Arctic Subsea Cables

NATO allies intercepted a covert underwater operation conducted by Russia near the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic region. Russian deep-diving submarines simulated the placement of a technology capable of damaging submarine communication cables.

The operation was carried out by Russia's Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research, known as GUGI. Western officials stated that the exercise did not cause actual damage to the existing infrastructure but was closely monitored and intercepted by the allies.

“The joint operation conveyed the message to Moscow that clandestine activities cannot remain undetected and that any attempt to attack critical infrastructure will have consequences.”

The activity took place near Svalbard, where two fiber-optic cables connect the islands to mainland Norway at depths of up to 2,700 meters. These cables transport critical data from the SvalSat satellite station, which is the largest in the world.

Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik stated that the joint operation sent a clear message to Moscow that clandestine activities cannot go undetected and that attacks on critical infrastructure will have consequences.

Submarine cables have become a vital component of European strategic infrastructure, ensuring international communications and financial transactions. Western intelligence officials fear that Russia is ramping up sabotage operations in preparation for a potential conflict with NATO.
