North Korea commissioned its new 5,000-ton naval destroyer Kang Kon at a ceremony in the eastern port city of Wonsan on Sunday. Leader Kim Jong Un attended alongside his teenage daughter, whom South Korean intelligence identifies as his likely heir.
State media quoted Kim calling the vessel "essentially an offensive destroyer" and part of "the state nuclear counteraction system." He also urged the development of a more reliable nuclear deterrent.

The Kang Kon is North Korea's second naval destroyer, marking a step in its push to modernize sea-based forces with nuclear-capable assets. Photos released by state media showed Kim and his daughter touring the warship and posing with sailors.
The commissioning coincides with the start of a trilateral military exercise by the United States, South Korea, and Japan. North Korea views the drill as a security threat and recently rebuffed President Donald Trump's decision to scale back a major joint exercise with Seoul.
Analysts say Pyongyang is increasing pressure to extract larger concessions from Washington. The regime has rejected diplomatic overtures while advancing its naval nuclear capabilities.
