Pakistan PM Warns India Over Indus Waters at UN

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the 81st UN General Assembly session on Friday, urging renewed diplomacy to end escalating conflicts in the Middle East. He declared Pakistan has chosen dialogue over confrontation and peace over war.

Sharif warned India that any attempt to stop, impede, or divert Pakistan's share of Indus River waters would be considered an act of war. He cited the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, stating it remains valid and binding despite New Delhi's suspension last year.

“Water must never be used as a weapon. Rivers must nourish nations, not divide them.”

The prime minister referenced the May 2024 cross-border clashes, claiming Pakistani forces silenced the enemy. He thanked US President Donald Trump for decisive leadership that prevented nuclear escalation between the neighbors.

Sharif highlighted Pakistan's role in facilitating the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Washington and Tehran. He praised Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their efforts.

The address covered Palestine, Kashmir, terrorism from Afghanistan, climate change, and UN reform. Sharif opened with a Quranic verse on peace and quoted founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah's support for the UN Charter.
