Peru Navy School Students Detained Over Alleged Sexual Assault on Bus

Peruvian authorities are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old student at the Liceo Naval Almirante Guise in San Borja, Lima. The incident reportedly occurred on September 15 inside a bus transporting the school futsal team back from a championship in Surco. The victim's family filed a formal complaint the following day.

The Seventh Family Prosecutor's Office confirmed that ten students, aged 16 to 17, were initially detained at the Lima Bertha Gonzáles Posada Eyzaguirre Family Police Station. Prosecutor Mariano de la Torre Hernández ordered Gesell Chamber testimony for the victim and statements from all detained minors. A forensic exam found injuries compatible with sexual assault and recommended at least four days of medical leave for the victim.

Four of the ten students were released after the 48-hour legal detention limit expired. The Prosecutor's Office has requested four months of preventive internment for the remaining six suspects. The Navy has separated the school director, a teacher, and the futsal coach from their posts pending the investigation.

A teacher, Giovana León, stated she had warned school directors for years about bullying and harassment among students, claiming bureaucratic hurdles prevented proper action. The victim's aunt alleged the school director initially tried to classify the incident as a mere "physical aggression" in an internal communique, downplaying the sexual abuse allegation.

President Keiko Fujimori announced the school's administration will transfer from the Navy to the Ministry of Education (Minedu) until December 2027. Education Minister José Chang confirmed the takeover, citing the need to prioritize student safety and discipline. The President emphasized that perpetrators must face the full weight of the law.
