Portugal, Norway win Nations League openers; Gakpo denies Klopp debut win

Portugal began their Nations League title defence with a 1-0 victory over Wales at Estadio Jose Alvalade. Joao Felix scored the only goal in the 21st minute, while Cristiano Ronaldo had a second-half strike ruled out for offside by VAR.

Norway defeated Denmark 3-2 in Oslo thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland. The striker reached 21 goals in 17 Nations League appearances, becoming the first player to surpass 20 goals in the competition's history.

The Netherlands salvaged a 1-1 draw against Germany in Amsterdam after Cody Gakpo volleyed home a 92nd-minute equaliser. The result spoiled the competitive debut of new Germany coach Jurgen Klopp, whose side had led through Felix Nmecha.

Virgil van Dijk had an early header disallowed for a foul on goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who made several crucial saves to keep Germany ahead until the final moments. Kai Havertz left the match injured in the first half for the visitors.

Greece came from behind to beat Serbia 2-1 in Belgrade after Andrija Zivkovic had given the hosts an early lead. Xavi Hernandez took charge of the Netherlands for the first time, becoming the first foreign coach of the Dutch since 1978.
