Sanchez warns UN of reactionary threat, urges Latin American woman for top post

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez addressed the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, delivering a nearly 15-minute speech in Spanish that condemned what he called a coordinated demolition of the multilateral order by "reactionary forces." He identified three pillars of this strategy: selfishness, ignorance, and cruelty, arguing that these forces despise scientific evidence and treat human lives as expendable.

Without naming the United States or President Donald Trump, Sanchez criticized policies associated with the current US administration, stating Spain "will not stay silent" against attempts to dismantle UN principles. He asserted that the world has moved backward in the eight years since his first address to the Assembly.

Sanchez called for a stronger UN, regulation of artificial intelligence, and the appointment of a Latin American woman as the next Secretary-General. He wore a Sustainable Development Goals pin and framed his argument as a defense of the founding ideals of the organization.

Regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta following a massive entry of migrants from Morocco in July, Sanchez rejected turning migrants into enemies or suspending the rule of law. He praised Ceuta residents for managing the crisis with decency and vowed Spain would emerge stronger by choosing the just path over the easy one.
