Spanish exchange student killed in Mexico; authorities probe feminicide

Spanish exchange student Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, 21, was killed Saturday night in Cuautla, Morelos, during what witnesses described as an armed robbery near a cultural center hosting a medicinal plant festival. She had arrived in Mexico a month earlier for an academic program at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos.

The Morelos prosecutor's office is investigating the case as a possible feminicide — a gender-based killing — while not ruling out other motives. Governor Margarita González Saravia said authorities are searching for a suspect and coordinating with federal agencies and the Spanish government.

“The nationality of Claudia has given this case an international dimension, but her life has the same value as all women murdered in Mexico.”

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares demanded a thorough investigation Monday, stating Spanish officials are in contact with the victim's family. The University of Granada, where Tacoronte studied early childhood education, called for an immediate probe with a strict gender perspective.

The Observatory of Femicide noted this is the fourth female student murdered in Morelos in 2026, following the killings of Aylin Rodríguez, Kimberly Ramos, and Karol Toledo. The group urged reinforced investigations and stronger prevention policies in a state with the nation's second-highest feminicide rate.

Official data show Morelos recorded 1.97 feminicides per 100,000 women from January to July 2026, well above the national average of 0.55. Cuautla has been under a Gender Violence Alert since 2015, one of eight Morelos municipalities with that designation.
