Vollering Wins World Title in Sprint After Niewiadoma Cramp

Demi Vollering won the women's elite road race at the 2026 UCI World Championships in Montreal on Saturday, securing her first rainbow jersey. The Dutch rider outsprinted Katarzyna Niewiadoma in the final 50 meters after the Pole suffered a severe cramp while leading.

The 180.4-kilometer race featured eight laps of the Mont Royal circuit with 2,570 meters of elevation gain. An early breakaway including Natalie Quinn and Marte Berg Edseth held a three-minute advantage before the peloton, led by the Netherlands, reeled them in.

Defending champion Magdeleine Vallières crashed heavily with 94 kilometers remaining in a pile-up that brought down 15 other riders. The Canadian was delayed several minutes and eventually abandoned the race with 60 kilometers to go alongside Adèle Normand.

With 38 kilometers left, Vollering launched a decisive solo attack on the Camillien-Houde climb, opening a significant gap. Niewiadoma bridged across to set up a two-woman duel for the title.

Vollering's victory completes a historic palmares, equalling Annemiek van Vleuten as the only women to win all three Grand Tours, the European Championship, and the World Championship.
