CBC News

CBC News is the English-language news service of Canada's public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada. The corporation was created in 1936, at a time when American broadcasting was filling Canadian airwaves, to build the country's own broadcast infrastructure, and it has stood at the centre of Canadian cultural policy ever since.

Its distinguishing capability is geographic reach: across the sparsely populated north, in Inuit and First Nations communities, CBC is often the only broadcaster and publishes in local languages as well. That service, which no commercial broadcaster could sustain economically, is the concrete demonstration of what public broadcasting is for.

It is funded by a mixture of parliamentary appropriation and advertising revenue, and the level of that appropriation is a recurring political argument.
