euronews was founded in Lyon in 1993 as a joint venture of European public broadcasters. The founding idea was straightforward: a channel that would report what happens in Europe from a continental rather than a single national vantage point. From the outset it built a structure that publishes the same pictures in multiple languages with separate audio tracks; it now broadcasts in many languages including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hungarian, Greek and Turkish.

Its best-known format is the No Comment strand: footage from the scene published with no narration or commentary, carried only with its natural sound. Because it makes visible the difference between the presentation of news and the event itself, the format holds a distinctive place in broadcast journalism.
