Alcaraz beats Paul to reach US Open quarterfinals
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz defeated Tommy Paul in straight sets, continuing his strong return from a four-month wrist injury layoff.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the US Open quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Tommy Paul on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match lasted two hours and 21 minutes.
Alcaraz, playing his first tournament since a right wrist injury sidelined him for more than four months, has dropped only one set through four matches in New York. The Spaniard, a two-time champion here in 2022 and 2025, said he would not have returned unless he could play at his usual level.
“I played my game. I tried to play my style. Tommy's such a talented player. His shots are pretty dangerous and it's sometimes pretty difficult to control the ball when it comes to you, so I just tried to be ready.”
Paul, ranked 21st, entered with a winning head-to-head record against Alcaraz but never led in the match. Alcaraz broke serve at critical moments in each set, including a 0-40 pressure game to claim the first set.
"I played my game. I tried to play my style," Alcaraz said on court. "Tommy's such a talented player. His shots are pretty dangerous... so I just tried to be ready."
Alcaraz will next face the winner of the later match between Ben Shelton and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka also reached the women's quarterfinals earlier Sunday.
