The match featured several flashpoints. Skriniar and Vlahovic clashed in the 52nd minute, both receiving yellow cards, while goalkeeper Ederson was also booked. Fenerbahçe's Kerem Aktürkoğlu appealed for a penalty in the 76th minute, but VAR upheld the referee's decision to wave play on.

Fenerbahçe introduced summer signing Romelu Lukaku for his derby debut in the 68th minute, while Marco Asensio missed the match due to a lingering fitness issue.

After the final whistle, Fenerbahçe president Aziz Yıldırım launched a scathing attack on the officiating, claiming two penalties were denied and suggesting the league should be suspended for a year to retrain referees. Kartal apologised to supporters, accepting full responsibility for the defeat. Beşiktaş responded to Archie Brown's pre-match comments with a social media post welcoming the visitors to Kadıköy.
