Cyprus ferry disaster death toll rises to 13 as search continues for 15 missing

A high-speed passenger ferry carrying 267 people capsized off the northern Cyprus coast on August 30, leaving 13 dead and 15 still unaccounted for. The Filo Jet sank shortly after departing Kyrenia (Girne) for Taşucu, Turkey.
Turkish Naval Forces vessels TCG IŞIN and TCG ALEMDAR located the wreck at approximately 550 metres depth on September 2 and began underwater robot inspections. Nine people, including the captain, have been arrested.
“No casualties remain in intensive care. We have lost 13 of our people so far. Search operations for the 15 missing continue 24/7.”
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel reported that all 239 survivors were hospitalized initially; 132 required inpatient care and 131 have since been discharged. Only one patient remains hospitalized and is improving, with no one in intensive care.
Health authorities mobilized 139 doctors and roughly 200 nurses across state, university, military and private hospitals. Psychiatric teams provided support to survivors and victims' families.
Search operations continue around the clock. The latest body was recovered during naval search efforts, with police working to identify the victim. Üstel thanked President Erdoğan, Vice President Yılmaz and Defence Minister Güler for their support.
The disaster has triggered a political crisis: Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı was dismissed, prompting his Rebirth Party (YDP) to withdraw from the coalition government.
