FIFA has officially confirmed that embattled president Gianni Infantino will run for re-election in 2027. A spokesperson stated that nothing has changed regarding his previous announcement made in April.
The confirmation follows days of uncertainty after Infantino initially dodged questions about his future. While attending the Under-20 Women's World Cup opening match in Poland, he smiled, gave a thumbs-up, and declined to comment directly.
“The FIFA president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.”
Infantino is currently facing the biggest crisis of his tenure since taking office in 2016. The heavy criticism stems from his now-abandoned plans to involve private investors in future World Cup business deals.
