Historic Cities Union meets in Kayseri to protect heritage

The Historic Cities Union held its 2026 General Assembly in Kayseri on 18-19 September, hosted by Mayor Memduh Büyükkılıç and chaired by Union President Mansur Yavaş. Representatives from 493 member municipalities attended the two-day session.

Yavaş said the Union, founded in 2000, has become a vital platform for sharing expertise and shaping conservation policy across Turkey. He announced a 250-300 million lira fund to support at least 100-200 local heritage projects this term.

“From now on, we will not do faulty work; we will consult our experts and have projects prepared by those who know.”

The Ankara mayor pledged to end careless restorations that have drawn public ridicule, vowing that all future projects will be vetted by experts before approval. He also highlighted plans to register geographical indications for local culinary traditions.

Yavaş outlined two flagship initiatives for the new term: a National Struggle Route and a Museum of Folk Science. He stressed that successful municipalities must promote every cultural asset to the world.

Host mayor Büyükkılıç showcased Kayseri's five universities, four organised industrial zones and a free zone, framing the city as a secure industrial hub in central Anatolia. He also recounted the early republican aircraft factory's history.

Delegates participated in cultural tours of Kayseri's gastronomic and historic sites during the programme. The assembly concluded after the council session on 19 September.
