Nor'easter Batters Northeast With Flooding, Power Outages

A nor'easter intensified off the East Coast starting Wednesday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous coastal flooding to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast through the weekend. Forecasters tracked two potential tracks, with models eventually converging on a path bringing the worst impacts to New England and Long Island.

By Saturday, more than 70,000 customers were without electricity across the Northeast as gale-force winds downed trees and floodwaters submerged roads. The National Weather Service warned of major coastal flooding over multiple high tide cycles, exacerbated by Saturday's full moon.

“This storm is expected to bring major coastal flooding to the Mid-Atlantic Coast over multiple high tide cycles through the weekend.”

In New Jersey, the boroughs of Surf City and Manasquan reported streets inundated with water, with some homes flooded. Sea Bright Mayor Brian Kelly warned flooding could reach six feet, comparing the event to 2011's Hurricane Irene. Voluntary evacuations were ordered in low-lying areas.

Boston and Providence saw conditions deteriorate Friday night into Saturday, while New York City experienced moderate winds and showers on the storm's western fringe. Dozens of flights were canceled at Boston, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard airports, and concerts were called off across the region.
