The CFDT Santé Sociaux Marne union has called for a mobilization on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the Ehpad nursing home in Aÿ-Champagne between 10:00 and 12:00. The action is part of a national public hospital sector protest.
Staff at the facility, currently at 90% capacity, say they are critically understaffed. Nurse numbers have fallen from 13 when occupancy was 70% to just eight today. An anonymous nurse said they sometimes have only three staff for nearly 200 residents.

Union secretary general Aurore Sarr said understaffing drives longer shifts, fatigue, and sick leave, creating a vicious cycle. The 2023 absenteeism rate reached 9.67%. Colleagues who left have not been properly replaced, forcing reliance on temporary workers.
Caregivers say they cannot spend quality time with residents. The nurse described working "on an assembly line" and feeling "like slaves" despite loving the job. The union demands more trained personnel as the core solution.
