Spain coach De la Fuente extends contract through 2032 World Cup

Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente has signed a contract extension that will keep him in charge through the 2032 European Championship, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Monday. The RFEF board approved the renewal during a meeting on September 21, formalizing an agreement announced days earlier by president Rafael Louzán.

De la Fuente, 65, has won three major titles since taking over in December 2022: the 2023 Nations League, the 2024 European Championship, and the 2024 Olympic silver medal. The new deal adds four years to his previous contract, which was set to expire after Euro 2028.

“The best is yet to come.”

Louzán stated the federation wanted to reward the coach's historic results with a salary increase that places him among the world's ten highest-paid national team managers. The president described De la Fuente as a "reference point" for stability and expressed hope for a third World Cup star.

At the signing ceremony at the Ciudad del Fútbol, De la Fuente said "the best is yet to come" and highlighted his excitement for the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host. He received video messages from former World Cup winner Vicente del Bosque and current players Rodri, Unai Simón, and Mikel Merino.

If he completes the full term, De la Fuente will become Spain's second longest-serving coach, behind only Ladislao Kubala, who held the post for nearly 11 years. The coach emphasized a short-term focus on upcoming Nations League matches against England.
