Trump, Mamdani Meet at Gracie Mansion; Advance Sunnyside Yard Housing Talks

President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held their third in-person meeting Monday at Gracie Mansion, the mayoral residence in Manhattan. The hourlong closed-door session occurred ahead of Trump's address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

Following the meeting, Trump publicly praised Mamdani, calling the residence a "beautiful place" and stating he wants the mayor to succeed because "what's good for New York" is good for the country. The Independent noted Trump spent the day criticizing political enemies and media outlets before the surprisingly cordial visit.

“I want [him] to be a great mayor, and he has certainly got potential, great potential.”

The leaders agreed to launch technical talks between City Hall housing teams and the White House regarding Mamdani's $21 billion proposal to build 12,000 homes atop Sunnyside Yard in Queens. The Bronx Times reported the plan could create 30,000 jobs, though Trump did not pledge federal funds, only calling it a "very federal-oriented job."

Mamdani said discussions covered federal support for the Queens project and the administration's revocation of Temporary Protected Status for Haiti, which threatens thousands of Haitian immigrants in New York. Trump acknowledged the mayor "feels very strongly" about the TPS issue.

Despite ideological opposition, the pair have maintained a diplomatic channel. Egypt Independent reported New York has avoided large-scale immigration enforcement threatened during the campaign, and Mamdani recently sued the administration over expanded "public charge" rules affecting green cards.
