Turkey blocks 98,000 sites in pre-derby betting crackdown

Turkish authorities launched a sweeping operation against illegal betting networks hours before the Fenerbahçe-Beşiktaş derby on September 5. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced the action coordinated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

The Istanbul Gendarmerie's Cyber Crimes Unit conducted the technical investigation. Teams identified 345 illegal betting platforms, 110 payment methods, and 1,200 IBANs used for financial intermediation.

“We will not allow those who try to turn sports excitement into illegal gain. We will continue our fight against illegal betting networks and crime proceeds determinedly.”

Courts ordered access blocks for approximately 98,000 internet sites linked to the gambling activity. The move aimed to cut off high-volume financial flows ahead of the heavily watched match.

Investigators seized 1,200 bank accounts belonging to 1,048 individuals and corporate entities. The accounts were allegedly used for depositing player funds and laundering proceeds.

Prosecutors opened investigations under Law No. 7258 on smuggling and money laundering statutes. The minister thanked the prosecutor's office, gendarmerie, and public servants involved.

Gürlek vowed continued crackdowns on networks converting sports enthusiasm into illicit profit. He emphasized the government's determination under President Erdoğan's leadership.
