Turkish FM Fidan in Damascus: Israel Main Threat to Syria's Stability

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan completed a two-day official visit to Damascus on September 12, holding talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Esad Hasan Şeybani. The visit signals deepening normalization between Ankara and the new Syrian administration.

Fidan met al-Sharaa for approximately two hours, discussing all bilateral and regional issues. He later told Turkish journalists that staying overnight in Damascus demonstrated life was returning to normal after years of war and isolation.

“Israel is the threat with the highest potential to drag Syria into instability.”

At a joint press conference with Şeybani, Fidan welcomed the Syrian Democratic Forces' declaration to dissolve and integrate into state institutions. He called the merger of all armed groups under central authority vital for Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and social cohesion.

Fidan identified Israel as the greatest threat to Syria's stability, accusing Prime Minister Netanyahu of viewing neighboring strength as a danger. He said Israel pursues destabilizing policies because it derives power from regional weakness, warning Tel Aviv would either accept regional peace or face further isolation.

Syria has been removed from international sanctions and terrorism lists, opening the door for economic investment. Fidan noted the economy is healing and a High Planning Group is preparing the groundwork for a planned visit by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
