Broadcasting in Iran is a constitutional state monopoly. All radio and television output in the country is run by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), which reports directly to the Supreme Leader; private television broadcasting is prohibited. Satellite dishes are likewise illegal, though widely used.

The consequence is that most Persian-language journalism is produced outside the country. Persian channels broadcasting from London, Washington and various European capitals reach audiences inside Iran by satellite and internet and function as a significant source of information during events in the country. The Iranian government routinely attempts to block them, and there are many documented cases of pressure on these channels' correspondents in Iran and on their families.

Every channel listed below broadcasts from outside Iran. That means the list does not carry the Iranian state's official account; what it carries is the journalism a Persian-speaking audience can reach outside state broadcasting. The channels differ in funding and editorial line, and each is described separately.
