teleSUR was founded in 2005 on Venezuela's initiative as a joint venture of several Latin American governments, a continental news channel. Its founding purpose was stated openly: to tell Latin America from the continent's own vantage point rather than through the frame of northern international channels.

The channel is state-funded and its editorial line aligns with the political position of the governments that founded it, which readers should hold in mind. Against that, it carries distinct value as a source viewing Latin American developments from within the continent and outside the customary frame. Its English edition addresses an international audience.
