False claim linking Flavio Bolsonaro to patron saint bill sparks massive online debate

A false rumor claiming presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro supported a bill to remove Our Lady of Aparecida as Brazil's patron saint generated 977,600 posts and 8.5 million interactions in 55 hours, according to the Democracy in Check Institute. The volume ranks as the third-largest political debate spike on social media in 2026.

The controversy originated from a 2007 bill by former Deputy Victorio Galli, archived in 2008, which proposed changing the title to "Patroness of Brazilian Catholics." Bolsonaro was a state deputy at the time and had no link to the proposal; he denied the allegation. GloboNews initially aired the connection but later retracted and apologized.

On Friday, Electoral Court Minister Andre Mendonca ordered platforms including X, Facebook, and Instagram to remove over 1,170 links asserting Bolsonaro or his family proposed or supported the change. Mendonca classified the claim as "notoriously false" and extended the order to future reproductions.

The takedown swept up posts from left-wing figures who criticized the ruling. Federal Deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL) appealed to the Superior Electoral Court, arguing her post did not repeat the falsehood but offered political opinion. Candidate Marcelo Freixo (PT) had a video removed by Meta after he questioned why Mendonca associated the term "militia family" with Bolsonaro.

Minister of Institutional Relations Jose Guimaraes (PT) and Deputy Chico Alencar (PSOL) denounced the measure as censorship. Guimaraes stated preventing Catholics from expressing devotion would be a "sad chapter of censorship," while Alencar called it a "scandal." Freixo alleged the removals arbitrarily favored a candidate one week before the election.

Analysis by Vox Radar showed the debate split sharply along partisan lines: 72% of right-leaning comments debunked the rumor, while 65% of left-leaning comments believed it. Two main narratives dominated: accusations of a "PT fake news" operation and criticism of Globo's error, versus expressions of Catholic faith and voting intent.
