Machado's Return to Venezuela Blocked in Three Failed Panama Operations

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been unable to return to her country after seven attempts over nine months, with three operations collapsing in Panama within 24 hours. A planned sea voyage was canceled due to an engine failure on the vessel, while flights to Aruba and Curaçao were blocked after Dutch authorities denied landing permission. Panama had issued Machado a special humanitarian diplomatic passport to facilitate the travel.

The failed operations highlight a gap between Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez's public statements that Machado may return whenever she wishes and the practical obstacles imposed by third countries. The sea route was designed to minimize dependence on foreign aviation permits, with a recreational boat scheduled to transit the Panama Canal on September 21 for a two-day Caribbean crossing.
