Macklemore Sparks Backlash and Support Over Free Palestine Call

American rapper Macklemore performed as an opening act for Ed Sheeran at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday and Saturday. During his set in front of more than 80,000 people, he wore a keffiyeh, displayed footage from Gaza and the West Bank on screens, and performed his pro-Palestine anthem "Hind’s Hall".

Macklemore delivered impassioned speeches expressing support for Palestinians and other populations living under conflict, while also calling for freedom in Lebanon, Cuba, Congo, Sudan, and Iran. Following the performances, the Israeli-American Council launched a petition urging Ed Sheeran and his management to drop the rapper from the remaining dates of the tour.

“To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters: criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you.”

The petition argued that the concert was not a political rally or protest, questioning the use of a global concert platform to advance a political agenda. In response, rights advocates, journalists, and social media users came out in support of the American rapper, defending his right to free speech.

Macklemore later clarified his remarks, stating that his calls were focused on peace and human dignity rather than being a criticism of Jewish people. He emphasized that criticism of Israel and apartheid does not target his Jewish brothers and sisters.

Singer Pink further fueled the controversy by sharing an Instagram Story post from StopAntisemitism that criticized Macklemore's appearance and called for concertgoers to receive apologies and refunds. This amplification divided social media users regarding political messaging at live music events.

Ed Sheeran's official tour listings continue to feature Macklemore as a supporting act for upcoming United States dates. No official announcements regarding refunds or the removal of the rapper from the tour have been made.
