Australia coach Sandy Brondello stated that there was no actual fire and someone had pushed the emergency alarm button in the elevator. The American team stayed at a different hotel and remained unaffected by the incident.
“That’s a what-if situation, isn’t it? Now we have that in our toolbox. Never done that before.”
Despite the interrupted sleep, Australia defeated Turkey 87-71 in the day's opening game at 11:30 a.m. local time. Australian forward Ezi Magbegor noted that the situation was out of their control.
Turkish coach Andrea Masson reported that his players only managed about three hours of sleep due to the disturbance, describing it as a difficult reality for the team.
