The Guardian

The Guardian was founded in Manchester in 1821 and has been published for more than two centuries. Its ownership is notable in journalistic terms: the paper is owned by the Scott Trust, a body that distributes no profit and whose sole purpose is to secure the paper's financial and editorial independence in perpetuity. The structure shields it from shareholder pressure and from being bought.

The paper has refused to place its digital output behind a paywall, building instead a model based on reader contributions. Its investigative work — including international collaborations such as the Snowden files and the Panama Papers — is what it is best known for.
